How to Unlock a Password-Protected Excel File
"Password-protected" can mean two completely different things in Excel — and knowing which one you're facing decides whether you need the password at all. This guide walks you through unlocking both, free and online, in a couple of minutes on any device.
First, identify which lock you have
Match your symptom to the correct type — it determines what you need:
- Excel asks for a password before the file opens → the file is encrypted with a file open password. You'll need that password to decrypt it.
- The file opens fine, but you can't edit cells → sheet protection. No password needed to remove.
- You can't add, delete or rename sheets → workbook structure lock. No password needed.
- You get a "reserved by another user" prompt → a write reservation. No password needed.
- Your macros are locked → a VBA project password. No password needed.
Only the first case truly requires the password. Everything else is an editing restriction that can be removed directly.
Unlock it with XLockFree (all lock types)
- Open the XLockFree unlocker. No install, no account, works on Windows, Mac, mobile.
- Upload your file. Drop your
.xlsx,.xlsmor.xlsfile onto the page. - Enter the open password only if the file is encrypted. If Excel never asked for a password to open the file, leave this field blank.
- Click "Unlock & Download". XLockFree removes every protection it finds and decrypts the file if you supplied the password. The unlocked copy downloads instantly.
See exactly what was removed. After processing, XLockFree shows badges — Sheet, Workbook, Encrypted, VBA — so you know precisely which locks were cleared from your file.
The important limit: encrypted files need the password
If your file is genuinely encrypted (it prompts for a password to open), that password is the decryption key. No legitimate tool can bypass strong encryption — that's the whole point of it. XLockFree decrypts the file the instant you provide the correct password, then saves an unencrypted copy so you're never asked again.
Forgot the open password entirely? Then the encrypted data is mathematically out of reach — anyone promising to "instantly crack" a strong Excel password is best avoided. Your realistic options are to try passwords you may have used, or restore an earlier unencrypted version from backup or email.
Is unlocking online safe and private?
It depends entirely on the tool. XLockFree was built privacy-first: your file is processed in-memory on Cloudflare's edge and is never written to disk, stored in a database, or logged. It's discarded the moment your download starts, and no account or email is required. You can read the full privacy policy for details.
Works on every device and format
Because everything runs in the browser, there's nothing to install and it behaves the same on macOS, Windows,
Linux, iPhone and Android. Supported formats include .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlam,
.xltm and the legacy .xls. You can even unlock several files at once in batch mode and
download them as a single ZIP.
Troubleshooting
"Incorrect password" when I know it's right
The open password is case-sensitive. Check Caps Lock, and make sure you're entering the open password (the one to open the file) — not a sheet-protection password, which goes nowhere in this field.
The file still opens read-only
That's a write reservation. XLockFree removes it automatically — just re-open the downloaded unlocked_ copy.

Can I unlock an Excel file without the password?
It depends on the lock. Sheet and workbook protection can be removed without a password. A file that is encrypted and asks for a password to open cannot be decrypted without that password.
Is it safe to unlock an Excel file online?
With XLockFree, yes. Files are processed in-memory on the edge and never stored, logged or shared. The file is discarded the moment your download begins.
What types of Excel passwords can be removed?
Sheet protection, workbook structure locks, write reservations and VBA passwords are removed without a password; file open passwords are decrypted when you provide the correct one.
Does unlocking change my data or formulas?
No. Unlocking only removes the protection. Your cells, formulas, charts and formatting are preserved.
